Well, I'm an American and like many of the responses Canada is my closest foreign nation. I'm assuming, however, I am much closer to Canada than the other responders. My hometown of Marysville (I just say Port Huron which is the much larger city directly north of here) is directly across from Ontario, Canada and is only separated by surely no more than 1000 meters (look I'm using the metric system for all us non-Americans) of the St. Clair River. Kind of funny when I have been abroad that I have been mistaken many times for a Canadian (really doesn't bother Americans usually but more Canadians seem to be bothered for being an American); I assume the reason for this is that us Michiganians (especially those closest to Canada) share more of a closer English dialect with people from Ontario than we do with Americans in many other regions. We also have quite a bit in common with our Canadian neighbors culturally, etc. as well.

The Netherlands, I live in the east midlands in England. France is very close as is Ireland. Scotland and Wales don't really count as they are dependant on England and part of the United Kingdom.

Ur has been destroyed but it was 150 km. west of Basra, Iraq. That would make the nearest country Jordan or possibly Israel - a moot point at this moment in time.
