I have taken Amtrak many times. From Denver to Chicago was a blast, since I went to the lounge and was entertained by some cowboys. It takes 24 hours to travel from Denver to Michigan, but I could not see spending the extra money for the sleeping car. You can actually get up and walk around, meet and talk to people and also enjoy the touring car where it is all glass enclosed for a better view of the country side. The food is expensive, and not the greatest, so pack a lunch.

Maybe THE most unreliable form of transportation in the USA besides a sailboat. But then again you know what to expect with a sailboat... not so much with Amtrak. If you have NOTHING but time than "all aboard"... If you need to be somewhere at a certain time then ride your bicycle... you'll get there sooner and probably safer. It's amazing to me that something as basic as operating a rail service could be so disdainful.... hitchhike.::

I took it from Los Angeles to Chicago and Los Angeles to San Francisco. If you are planning on a long trip, I would definitely recommend getting a sleeping car. I slept in the seat the entire trip. It was extremely uncomfortable. Also to eat in the dining car is very expensive. If you get a sleeper, your meals are included. Amtrak is great for short excursions.

I spent 3 days on one and even had a cabin for part of the trip. It was dusty and bumpy and the ride was terrible but the staff was wonderful.

I used to use it for business trips all the time to NYC and never had a problem. Nice cushy seats and they even have outlets where you can plug in your laptop.
