Ok, I see an answer here that says its "easier to read the meter", if the breaker box is outside.... now... these are two different items, folks... a meter base, and a breaker box (or panel). Typically, the electric comes to the home, thru the meter base, where the electric meter is mounted, and into the home, to the circuit panel (or breaker box, as some would call it).

Frankly, I wouldnt want my circuit panel outside. Not only for the sake of keeping the circuits as dry as possible, but also for keeping out those who shouldnt be in there in the first place.

My suggestion is if you are looking to install a breaker box, put it inside. If you are looking at purchasing a home with one on the outside... make it a stipulation that it be moved to the inside.

Have Fun!

Don't know bout Va but most all breaker boxes are outside to make it easier for meter reading.

Unless you have a local code preventing it, a circuit breaker panel can be located outside. It needs to have a different kind of enclosure that is rain proof (typically a NEMA 3R enclosure is used).

you'd have to check your local code, I live in Texas and mine is outside. Maybe look at a website for your city or state, there is usually links for city departments like code compliance. If you live out in the "country" i.e. unincorporated areas, you are not as subject to building codes, but your electricity supplier may have restrictions.

i believe that all residential breaker boxes need to be located inside the dwelling.
