The cartliede can also grow over the piercing. That happened to me. It hurt and smelled rotted. Gangrene can actually be an issue with this. Stay away.

well if its your upper cartiledge you should be fine and not worry about being paralyzed. There is a piercing called a tragus the cartiledge in the middle part of your ear (just look up Tragus online to see what im talking about) A nerve runs through there that could cause the side of your face to be paralyzed. ANYWAYS! GET IT DONE PROFESSIONALLY no matter what. if your friend does it the equipment may not be sterile which may lead to an infection. If he/she does it with a sewing needle it will only push the cartiledge to the side then also lead to an infection. You need to get it done professinally with a hollw needle so it makes a clean cut through the flesh. It costs around 20 to 30 dollars. So either be in pain by a friend doing it wrong or spend a small amount of money get cleaning instructions and baby it till its healed. Cartiledge piercings are more likely to get infected because theres not as much blood flow to the piercing liek there is if you get your ear lobe pierced. Hoep this helps =) Also always make sure the place your getting pierced at is sterile with all of their equiptment and uses a new needle on customer.!! also never get a piercing done with a gun (they're not sterile) always get a piercing with a needle

I'm a body piercer, and I would recommend that You get it done at a piercing studio professionally. Not with a stud gun. Not at home.
There are risks with the ear cartlage piercing, but they are not as intense and common as you may think. The most common is with home piercings and with stud gun piercings.
When you get pierced with the stud gun it shatters the cartlage and can cause the piercing to heal incorrectly, this causes abnormal pressure on the piercing, on the cartlage and can trap bloodflow. The incorrect jewlery that they use makes dirt and bacteria easy to get inside your fresh piercing. Never get a stud right away, always a hoop or a CBR( Captive bead ring) 14 or 16 gauge.
Another thing that happpens if you do it with a gun is you can get "cauliflower ear" which causes your ear to become deformed. This is common with wrestling, but can happen with cartlage piercings, especilly when pierced with the stud gun, or with home piercings. These piercings cause so much trauma to the cartlage that it can cause the cartlage problems.

The best thing to do is to get it done at a professional piercing shop. Make sure they are clean and hygenic. Make sure they have an autoclave for sterelization and that they do spore testing.

There are many more risks involved, such as hitting blood vessels, which a trained piercer will avoid when he or she pierces you.

Yes, there is that danger. I had three done professionally.... but before the last two.... I tried to do one myself. Don't let anyone but the pros do it. I did not paralyze myself, but I'll tell you what did happen.... a half hour after I had first started trying to pierce my cartilage (very difficult w/ just a pin, btw) I got the pin through..... unfourtunatly when I took it out and tried to put the earring in the hole it was too small and then one of the worst burning sensations shot through my ear and face upon attempting to put the earring in. Just get it done at an ear place - good luck.
P.S. It really doesn't hurt as bad when the pros do it... actually it's virtually painless.

you should get it prfoessionally done instead of having a friend do it. its safer & they tell you all the risks involved. i actually think the only really dangerous part id the tragus (little bit of skin that sticks out from yer cheek area but still in the ear if you know what i mean) & if that is done wrong my friend said you could damage the nerves on that side of yer face. i dont know if thats true or not but its always better to ask a pro. have a fun piercing! :)

Ok im def. the queen of peircings so let me give you some words of advice DONT LET YOUR FRIEND DO IT!!!!!!!! I had a friend that done hers herself and later had to have surgery because of it. Go to an actually peircing parlor and it should be like 15 dollars. But research the parlor first make sure they are well maintained and do a good job and no one has horror stories about them. Make sure whoever does it doesnt do it with a gun because this will cause scare tisse and will hurt really bad so make sure they use a needle. But its a peice of cake. Im not going to say it doesnt hurt because it does alittle but nothing to be scared if! Peircings are like drugs there addictive!

It damage mea little better than an everyday ear piercing, yet I did mine at homestead! yet in case you get it done with a gun, it would not damage! What you choose to study about that is you save the stud in there for 3 months, turn it & sparkling it with aniceptic… everyday. they're proned to get contaminated, so that you need to save it sparkling! you even ought to leave some variety of earring in for a minimum of a 12 months or 2. also hoop earrings do not look that sturdy in it. yet another element do not get both ears done together you wont be able to sleep for a lengthy time period :p take exhilaration in YOUR NEW PIERCING! :)

No, you cannot get paralyzed from an ear piercing.
If you must have your friend do it, please read this FAQ
http://www.bmezine.com/diyp.html it is for do-it-yourself piercing.
and this is why you should NEVER have your cartilage done with a gun http://modblog.bmezine.com/2006/07/24/gun-piercing/
