why is Paris considered the capital of fashion?

Paris started Couture and still is home to more high end designers than any other city. As fo what you find in stores, only NYC can compete. For what women wear around you, Paris is number one followed closely by the Southern European cities, Rome, Madrid. In NYC or London, you have nicely and originally dressed women but you also have yuck. It is rare that you look at any Parisienne and think yuck.

I guess it's partly a cultural thing - Paris was the fashion capital back when the French court set ALL the styles, and since then, that's just the way it's been: a lot of aspiring designers used to go to Paris, and a lot still do. And so the cycle goes on.

Paris has a high concentration of "maisons de couture" (houses of fashion) and the styles they have been inventing for centuries have always caught the fancy of the rest of the world. Parisian women have always had a look that men adore and women want to emulate. The French have an innate sense of style that people want to copy. The designers also have a great ability to market their designs to the rest of the world.
