"A New Hope" was in the opening sequence (where all the words scroll up the screen) but the actual title of the movie was just "Star Wars."

Nope, just Star Wars. As an introduction the real title was made secondary. George Lucas didn't think anyone woulld go to a movie named A New Hope

Yes Because when the opening scene did that long crawl across the screen *you know where the wordfs got smaller and smaller as it went up the screen* it said

You got it Jack. Episode IV. Just watch the original opening credits (with the story in yellow letters that scroll up the screen before they start the movie). Right up top it says "Episode IV: A New Hope."

My VHS just says STAR WARS... and I remember sitting in the theater on opening day... the screen just said STAR WARS in big letters.

sort of like World War One didn't have the "one" added until the second one.

was Revenge of the jedi?

It was changed because people who worked for Lucas felt that story wise that would not fit as a jedi way.

No, that changed when it was re-released as the trilogy, as Episode Five is "Empire Strikes Back" and Six is "Return of the Jedi."
