Pre Menstrual Syndrome is a physical malady that has symptoms in personality or emotions of the sufferer.....

just as severe pain will have symptoms in personality and emotions....

The human body has a myriad of chemicals that it can release to attempt to deal with physical maladies, many hormones are also released into the bloodstream to achieve specific purposes in a normal life. Sometimes the chemicals released to achieve one thing will have adverse effects in other areas...

it is just the way we work..

PMS can and does affect a woman's mental health but is due to a woman's hormonal changes throughout her monthly menstrual cycle.

(I use the term "Hormonally Intoxicated" for PMS, but that emphasizes the difference, as a person's hormones may not make the slightest difference in Mental diseases.)

Mental illness is a broad term used to describe a wide range of diagnosable psychiatric illnesses. PMS cannot be referred to as such as it affects emotions due to the affect of the gynecological changes the body goes through and not the psychiatric illnesses that plague it.
However,
PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) resembles major Depression, and can be treated like Depression.

When going through PMS, different hormones are triggered in your body to act the way you do...mood swings, cramps, etc. Plus it only lasts for 4-7 days.

A mental disorder can last a lot longer. Hormones can be triggered in your body to make you act certain ways, but for longer periods of time.

PMS is more like a mental preparedness for the dis-order to come

i don't think so, i have a BA in psychology and it never came up in the abnormal psych class. I think pms comes from hormonal changes in your body which change your mood...so it's probably considered more of a physical dysfunction or issue rather than a psychological one.

PMS is definately a hormonal imbalance problem! It has nothing to do with any mental problems.

no.

previous versions of DSM (Diagnostic statistical manual of mental disorders) I think included this as well as homosexuality as mental disorders.

current versions of DSM (like the DSM-IV) have excluded such items

PMS is not a mental disorder...more like physical symptoms of menstruation
