They are not "wrong". It depends if you are in the US or the rest of the English speaking world. The US spell it "separate", and this is forced on us via Google Search and even in Google Chrome s built in spell checker - even if you change your language setting to Australian, for example.
The rest of the world spells it "seperate". But, true to the American culture, most of what you ll find on the net is a lot of people saying this is "wrong", and their way is "correct", even going as far as claiming "seperate isn t even a word; it s not in the dictionary!"

Separate. I had a teacher that told me the word separate had "a rat" in it. That's how I remembered the a.
