I just saw on a link that the Chicago City Council voted to raise Retail Workers' Raise to $10.00/hr plus $3.00 an hour in benefits.
I'm guessing that has something to do with Walmart.
As long as the illegals come here looking for work, we won't see any decent strides in raising minimum wages.
My solution for that is all of those employers who want to hire illegals should GO to Mexico. See what kind of tax breaks they get there!

Who will fend for the little guy, Not the repuglicans. The repuke's are all about big business and large corporations. If you look who voted for and who against you will find it was a party line vote with the democrats for and the repuke's against. Edit: Strange day has bought the repuglican lie, when you lift something up you lift from the bottom and everyone moves up, when you lift from the top, only the very top moves. That is the truth.

Well if you want to play Republican vs. Democrat... Why not instead of raising minimum wage, we get Democrats to go along and get rid of the taxes that we all have to pay from our income. Less income tax, Soc. Sec., Medicare, Unemployment insurance, etc., we have to pay; then more money we can bring home to feed our kids.
Edit: why stop at $10, $20 or even a $100 an hour? Let's go up to say, a $500,000 a year. lol...

Because they're smart! Raising the minimum will only increase other costs (e.g., housing, rents will go up when wages increase, people may gross more but their eom net will be about the same). Other costs have already been more than adequately pointed out. Study your history, whenever pay increases so do all other costs associated with whoever is paying or being paid. Happens over and over again.

It's all about economics, my friend. If you raise the minimum wage, business will have higher costs. Because they have higher costs the price of the products they sell with go up and take the cost of living with it. Therefore people who work for minimum wage will really be no better off than they were before.

definitely should raise the minimum wage to $100 per hour, then people would not have to work so much to live, would only need to work a couple hours a day. that would be so much better for everyone.

To answer your question, raising the minimum wage increases costs for companies, which means it lowers their profits, making them invest less, which slows down the economy.
