no, it might be a disadvantage but with hard work and dedication, anyone any size can play football...weight lifting is imperative in order to get bigger, assuming your child is old enough to work out (usually around 13 or when he goes through puberty) if he's younger than that then it's nothing to worry about because pee wee football has maximum weight requirements in order to protect the smaller kids.

Yes. The awful truth is that a child can play football with a small frame when younger, but the physical demands of high school football can be too great for some very small to handle. I know that there are people on here that will say heart is bigger than body, but that is only true in a dream world. Someone who is 5'5", 130 lbs is no match for some 6'2", 210. If he is young, let him have fun, when he is older, maybe he should specialize in another sport. And medical steroids for growth, even by prescription, can have long lasting, detrimental effects.

our allstar running back was only about 140 pounds and no taller than 5'6" so yes it is safe, there are positions where it is much more physical than others, but i am only 5'9" and 160 lbs and the only injuries i have gotten from football are a broken thumb and a badly sprained ankle, there is so much padding these days it is very hard to get hurt by contact, yes he will get hit hard, and it might hurt right away, but in football there is soo much adrenaline flowing that you dont feel it much. i think it is a very safe sport.

Absolutely! If your child his small for his age then football may not be the right sport for him as it does get rough. Tackling and all. I certainly woulnt want a hundred and ten pound kid falling on top of my seventy pound kid. OUCH!!!!!! Maybe you should try to sway him in the direction of baseball or soccer which are less of contact sports.

Depends on who he is playing against. If you are worried about him, ask a sports medicine doctor. That's what my mom did, and he gave me the OK to play on the high school "B" team, a squad for smaller guys (under 160 pounds).

It all depends on what position they'll play. Linebacker, yes. WR, possibly.

Of course, theres always people so small framed that they can't do anything.

Wishful thinking mom...
too small framed will matter in college...
but not youth sports.

If he is fast and quick, he could make a good Running Back. There have been a few small running backs who were very succesful.

Obviously you can't be too scrawny but look at NBC announcer Chris Collinsworth. He became an all-pro WR and he's a rail.
