The basics of a good story are a basic plot line with rising and falling action. Characters are key to a good story too, try using cliche characters such as a damsel in distress or a moustached villian in a cloak. I also found, as i write myself, good practice is to take an old story and put a new twist in it. Twist HUanzel and gretel to make a crime story or Aladdin makes a great love story set in modern times. But most important make sure the story means something to you or it wont be any fun to write it and therefore much less fun to write.

structure is key. It's not like writing an essay. You need to start by working out your characters. Their personalities, relationships, and their views and values.
The introduction should introduce the environment (setting, place etc;) main characters and why they are there.
Remember that in a fictional story your intro can be a few paragraphs even a full chapter.
The "body" of the text should include what is happening, the climax and resolution.
It's not hard it;s just time consuming to do it right.
feel free to contact me...This is only a very basic outline.
Good luck

A narrative story is about organization, craft and conventions.
Organization is about drafts and using a dictionary and revising.
Conventions are about using correct grammar and punctuation and spelling.
Craft is the important part where you make it interesting with a good beginning and end, descriptions, sound words, vocabulary and strong verbs. The power of the writing is in the verbs...that is the place to revise. good luck

Your story has to make sense from beginning to end. The story also had to have a plot, setting, climax, and resolusion (err.... ending). And don't forget to check for errors.

I would say, first read. The more you read, the better you write.
Outline what you want to happen - something simple to start - then fill in the in betweens
