If the question is when is it "legal" to slap another man, the answer would be only in self-defense or in the legitimate defense of a third person who is being attacked. Even with the provocation of "fighting words", no state allows the use of force in response to abusive speech. Slapping another man without provocation is the crime of "battery", a misdemeanor in most states. On the other hand, if the verbal provocation is great enough, juries have been known to ignore the judge's instructions and vote to acquit.
One other justification: you can use reasonable non-lethal force to eject a trespasser from your property if the trespasser does not comply with your verbal request that he leave.
