Before you get pierced...ask yourself these questions.....

Do they have an autoclave? (Its what hospitals use to sterilize equipment)
Are they doing regular spore testing?(it checks to make sure the autoclave works)
Can you see the spore testing results? ( many shops display this on the wall)
Can you see their portfolios?(its good to know that they are experienced)
Do they have a license?( In some states)
Are they nice and friendly?(if you feel uncomfortable leave!)
What material of Jewelry are they using?
Is it Surgical stainless steel Implant grade,PTFE or titanium?( If they are using silver, stainless steel or metal LEAVE)
Do they explain aftercare to you?

Claire's is not clean. The ear piercing gun comes into contact with blood all the time and is only wiped down with alcohol. Alcohol does not sterilize anything. I've never seen them wear gloves, or practice proper cross contamination procedures.

I got mine pierced at Piercing Pagoda when I was younger and they did it perfectly. If I were to do it again right now, I'd avoid going to Claire's because I've witnessed several of their amateur cashiers take hold of the gun and pierce peoples' ears improperly (the studs were not perfectly centered on the lobes). Your doctor or a piercing/tattoo specialist would be the best bet...chances are they'll use a long needle instead of a gun. It's strange to watch this, but it will ensure accuracy of placement.

I have to support Claire's too, even though you aren't interested in going to them. I had my ears re-pierced after they'd been closed for almost 10 years. I have (as I discovered) a nickel allergy so I have to wear pure metals or my ears get infected. Claire's pierced them with solid white gold studs, and I cleaned them as directed, even after I was able to change my earrings. Trust me, I have super sensitive skin so if anything bad was going to happen it would happen to me. I'll admit, I did look kind of funny walking out with the little pink "I just got my ears pierced!" kit but I was happy with the results.

Dont use a GUN to peirce your ears go to a peircing parlor because a gun will only cause more pain and will cause scar tissue. Plus you are not required by law to have training when using a piercing gun so pay the 20 bucks and go to a piercing parlor!

I went to Claire's for mine. It's usually free and the earrings are a reasonable price. They also might sell cleaner there, but I'm not sure because it was so long ago.

Go to a piercing parlor. I went to one of the places you named and the lady almost missed with her gun and darn near pierced right at the edge of my ear.

I bought a gun at Sallys beauty supply and did it myself. It's the only way you'll know for sure that it's as sterilized as possible

A reputable tattoo parlor, they should show you all the sterile needles and stuff before they begin!
