I really feel that AMD is a better brand but in reality ir could go either way.

Many of the others mistakenly believe that one is better than the other. The truth is that both AMD and Intel processors have their own advantages.
Intel had the lead in the early days from the Pentium and Pentium II. The Pentium III had some stiff competition when AMD released the first Athlon, but it still held a slight edge overall. Everything changed when the Athlon XP and Pentium 4 first hit the scene. The Athlon held the edge most of the time ever since.
Intel just released their newest CPU, the Core Duo (Conroe), which has a lot of promise. In just about every benchmark, it blows the Athlon 64/X2 out of the water. Intel's road map is well laid out as well, unlike AMD which has now an uncertain or unpublicized future. It's almost as if AMD and Intel are swapping places for the first time since the Pentium III.
The bottom line, however, is that both companies have strong offerings at the moment. Both have for the past few years. You really can't go wrong with either company...

My answer is based on info I gathered about 6 years ago, and is probably dated, but here goes. Comparing equivalent CPUs, AMD is faster than Intel. BUT, AMDs tend to run hotter than the Pentium. My desktop 'puter is an AMD, but my laptops are all Intel. You can always add more cooling fans in a desktop, but not on a laptop. I abandoned a plan to build a small form factor (sff) about 5 years ago. My preferred CPU is an AMD. But motherboards for an sff AMD ran REALLY hot.
Those problems have probably been corrected by now. Go to a library, and read some magazines that address either "building your own" or updating something you already have. Mags are very truthful, and will tell you the overall winner. It isn't too hard to find a benchmark test that compares by software aps. If an AMD clearly leads Intel in games, it may stagger to its knees during number crunching, etc.
It depends on what you want and what you mostly do with your computer. Nobody can give you a definitive answer to your question.

Pentium get my vote for processing power. I have an AMD at the moment, have had no probs but pentium have a higher throughput. But in terms of cost AMD are the way to go.
Intel are releasing their quad core early next year.

AMD is far better than PENTIUM. AMD is better in performance & comparitively much cheeper than pentium processors. This is the case even before AMD launches 64 bit processors.
After the launch of AMD 64 bit processor, the performance of AMD is uncomparible. This condition priviles even after the launch of Duo processors by INTEL.

I personally prefer AMD. They offer faster processors at a cheaper price than Intel. Furthermore, they have been coming up with faster processors than Intel. In fact, the market share of AMD is now bigger than Intel's. I guess part of the reason being that AMD focuses on developing processors while Intel not only does processors but also on other technologies.
However, on the mobile end, I do prefer Intel's as they seem to have processors which are cooler and have longer battery life.

I've been working with processors for 8 years now.
I've dealt with cyrix, risco, AMD, and intel.
If your just going to play games with your system or compile software with it, then the best choice would be an Intel Pentium.
If your going to use your computer for everything except Open GL based games, then AMD would be the best.

They're about the same. AMD tends to cost less though.
