I've just thought of this... when did music start? Who thought of beats, patterns, ect. Were cavemen just really bored one day and started pounding on stuff or what?

No one really knows how music started, but it is clear that even as far back as 5000 BC, music was used in religious ceremonies. Before then, it could have been used as one way to communicate with others. In ancient Greece, they even had music competions between ensembles. In most all countries, music was a very important part of their daily life. The beats and patterns before people actually made "music" probably meant something to the people in their life or could be a way of warning another group of people in the distance.

I Luv Joel M...the movie you're thinking of is probably History of the World Part 1, classic Mel Brooks.

No one knows when music began. Archaeologists have found instruments used for possible long distance communications dated back to 18,000 B.C. Instrumental music has been a part of ancient cultures. However, it is popular that much of the credit for modern music extends to the Middle Ages to the Gregorian Chants. Modern music theory developed from these simple chants. The usage of structure (meter, beats and pattens) began to be used in the 12th century

Music started the moment the first human started existing. Music is the universal language and is probably the one thing that's most natural to humans.

Don't wrack your pretty little brain. The rhythms of sound have been attractive for as long as there has been a single person in the world. And just as today, there have always been those serious in their belief that they have talent in creating these rhythms, even when such is often furthest from the truth.

This is going to sound strange but it probably started in heaven with the angels (seraphims & cherubims?) singing praises to God. Heres the shocker. Lucifer (AKA satan) was like the praise leader before he rebelled against God. True. By the way I am a Christian and not a master at sarcasm.
