when can gay men stop being scared of being hurt or even killed for who we are?

Oh, Honey, if I could answer that, I could solve all the world's problems. Hate is really fear turned nasty...and the fear of things that are different from what one knows/believes/sees etc...is so ingrained in humanity. We'll all have to have a major upheaval ...either that or a global epiphany (I'm hoping for the epiphany. It's easier to clean up after) before people stop hating. Bless you, my son, for being who you are.

That's a tricky question.

"When can Gay men stop being scared..."
We can stop the fear NOW; however, that won't stop hatred by others.

Regardless of how many legal battles we win and how many rights we are [eventually] granted, the hate and anger of others will *always* be present. Just ask any African American living in the US, or any Caucasian living in South Africa. Bigotry doesn't die.

Murders occur all the time, all over the world and for a plethora of reasons. Simply being a GLBT person doesn't give us the monopoly on death by homicide.

I think the answer to your question is to LIVE YOUR LIFE AS YOU WOULD, but be prudent about your actions. It doesn't take a neurosurgeon to come to the conclusion if you step into a redneck bar located in a southern state (or probably any Red State in the US) with your husband/partner and begin public displays of affection, that you won't attract attention. Needless to say some of that attention will most likely result in physical injury.

It IS possible to avoid potentially dangerous places without sacrificing your self-esteem and your right to live your life in peace and with as much happiness as you can grab.

Personally, I enjoy PDA's. However, I pick and choose those "safe" places. For instance, when my car was in the shop and my husband took me to work in the mornings, we'd always give each other a kiss goodbye. We'd also hold hands when in our car(s) and if we wanted, we'd also kiss. I'm sure we got a second glance every now and again, but never were we threatened in that environment. Perhaps no one noticed?

I refuse to let fear rule my life. At the same time, I won't let stupidity destroy it.

The world is filled with ignorant, ill-informed and hate-filled people. The reality is they will always be with us.

Don't let fear rule your life. Just as you would with sex: LIVE SAFELY.

And LIVE WITH DIGNITY.

Best Wishes!

The only way to be free from people's hate is to be free from people. As long as people exist there will always be hate. People hate out of fear of what they don't know. The more accustomed they become, the more accepting they become. There will always be some people who would rather cause you grief than accept you for who you are. That's everywhere, so you'll always have to watch your back. Times are changing but it's a very slow process. Continue being yourself and be proud of who you are.

You can stop being scared any time you want. You don't need to carry that around. I'm not saying don't be careful, I'm saying don't be afraid. Accept the possibility of damage, really accept it, then stop fearing it. Life. Is. Risk.

Show me someone in the whole world who is free from people's hate, who for sure will *never* die because of a hater. There's a hater for everybody. Gandhi, Lennon, who could possibly hate them?

After thousands of years? Not in our lifetimes. Ignore what you can, prepare for the rest.

Unfortunately there will always be something or some reason for people to hate. I had thought we were past the differences of religion until I attended a wedding and heard the elderly attendants/family members bashing the other side for their religious denomination.

It may be a damn long time. There are those in the world who hate to see people happy, and have to have every thing their way. Until people start to think for themselves and learn ffrom us, we will always have fear the hatred of others

We're making gains, but not until people become educated, and stop looking for a scape-goat to put down.

When you realize that god meant for a man and a women to fall in love and be together. Not for you to be with the same sex.
