you may suffer from sleep deprivation. go to a sleep lab and have them hook you up all night. if you have sleep apnea (stopping breathing while you are asleep), you may not go into Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, which affords you the most rest. your mind needs to have dreams. you have the strongest dreams in REM sleep. your body also is almost paralyzed when in REM sleep, but i do not know why.
if you are overworking yourself you may be suffering from sleep deprivation without having sleep apnea (easily treatable).
if you snore loudly, you may have too much cartiledge inside of your nose, preventing you from breathing properly. only an ENT specialist can tell you. if so, get her to give you the sweet and not painful operation to remove the extra cartilege that you were most likely born with, then have routine annual examinations to determine whether it grew back, which it usually does not.
sleep deprivation can cause you to hear many sounds that seem to come from nowhere, or, conversely, the sounds may be real. for example, if your building has thin walls, it's so easy to hear murmurring from a tv that is on next door.
sleep deprivation, when over a term of weeks, first causes you to feel paranoid, and if not treated, causes you to become violent.
other than the above, you may be experiencing a mental problem that only a qualified shrink can help you with.
good luck.

There is a possibility that you may have tinnitus:
"Tinnitus, "ringing ears" or ear noise is a phenomenon of the nervous system connected to the ear, characterised by perception of a ringing, beating or roaring sound (often perceived as sinusoidal) with no external source. "
Your mind, in its tired state, may be attempting to resolve this sound in to something recognizable, so you hear it as a party, music, babbling, etc.
"While the term 'tinnitus' usually refers to more severe cases, a 1953 Heller and Bergman found in a study of 80 tinnitus-free university students that 93% reported hearing a buzzing, pulsing or whistling sound. An increasing number of young people are developing tinnitus; as a result, it is sometimes referred to as "the club disease" as many people experience tinnitus or "ringing ears" after attending loud clubs or concerts or using personal stereos at unsafe volumes."

I have had the exact problem, only I could hear voices speaking in a hundred languages, and the weird part is I could un derstand what they were saying. I thought I was going crazy, the doctor I went to said I was fine, nothing mental, and damage. I dont understand either, but it so weird, I have only told one other person, and they couldnt tell me anything either. If you want email me fairyqueen62206@yahoo. I always wondered if anyone else experienced this problem.

i've had this happen. it's usually at night while i'm laying in bed. i'll think, "oh the t.v. must still be on in the living room." the sound is very faint but like people talking, sometimes it sounds like many people at once. i'll get up to turn the tube off and it's already off. sometimes it sounds like the radio in my son's room is on, and it will be off. this doesn't happen all the time, but enough to make me wonder. i used to think it was the fishtank bubbling in the front room, but it happened when the power was out. creepy $hit.

One time I was in my room and I heard water running in the kitchen. No one else in the family knows how to run water in the kitchen sink, but me. I crept down the stairs. I picked up my chihuahua Boo - I was going to throw him at the intruder - as I peered around the corner, OMG! I gasped out loud. It was UNBELIEVABLE..... my 19 year old daughter was.... was... washing dishes without me nagging her to death. I lit a candle and started charging admission. Truly this is a miracle.

I haven't ever heard unusual sounds. My daughter swears that she can hear the dog whining from my room sometimes, but the dog is outside.
