My father would like to be buried on his farm. I haven't been able to locate any web sites on the legalities but have heard it is legal if done within 24 hours of death. Do you know where I might find the law spelled out for this situation? Or who to ask? We live in Illinois, assuming the laws may vary from state to state. Thanks!

Each state has its own laws.
I have a problem with the idea that it would be OK if done within 24 hours of the death, as most states require an autopsy to determine the cause of death is not attended by a doctor or nurse.

I would contact the state agency or board that regulates cemeteries and ask them what permits you might need in order to bury your father on his farm. I would not bother asking a mortuary or funeral home as they have an interest in having you use their services, which you might not do if you "do it yourself".

Ask the clerk of court nearest your residence if you are allowed to bury your father on his farm.

i would contact a local mortuary. the last i knew, you can't bury humans or animals(pets included) in your own yard. however, since you live on a farm, i'm not sure how that works. the mortuary would know.
