In retrospect, I would have to say: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. would be the person I most admire. The reason (though you didn't ask) is because I had the opportunity to witness his grace and peace and overall demeanor as a young child. I had a chance to walk with him as the march proceeded to Selma, Alabama and give him fruit as we walked. Though I was young, I was growing up in the throngs of the most controversial and life-changing era in our country. It was life-changing for me. Additionally, I have to include my mother and aunts in that mixture. Southern living was not always safe for blacks. There were always two languages to learn, two modus operandi to learn in order to just live and be let alone. I could have been bitter, hostile and hateful. But thanks be to God, I had a loving and caring mother who taught me that I must learn to love people no matter 'what' they did to me. That is an awesome task to teach and to instill in ones young - and the young take hold of it and pass the same teaching forward. My mother worked hard and sacrificed much. There was nothing I would not do for her - up until her death - we were very, very close. I believe the combination of these two along with the village that helped to raise me - made me who I am today. In spite of all that might be wrong - I remember and practice the love both of these individuals, Dr. King and my mom and family taught me.

Two people: My father, who died a few years ago after having a stroke at 63. He was my hero, friend and the best father ever. He taught me the importance of honesty, generosity, having a sense of humor and having a good work as well as moral ethic. He always thought he fell short in being a good parent. When he was above all others.
The second is my best friend of 35yrs. Other than my father, she is the only person I know who is true to herself, she's authentic, brutally honest, loyal, funny, compassionate, generous, intelligent and always inspires me to be the best I can be by just being who she is. I feel blessed to have had both of these people in my life.

I would say the dead because I have had a lot of people die in my family that I looked up to. Also, I do family research on people that have died. There are a lot of celebrities that I admire too that are dead. So, dead it is.

(shaking head...hearing clanging noises at people not understanding the living/dead thing...lol)

My mom died eight years ago, and she was the absolute strongest individual I have ever known. She was physically disabled, yet remained active. She was in constant pain, yet remained gentle and enthusiastic. She was divorced, and a widow, yet remained calm and loving. She was brought up to be meek, yet she was outspoken when she needed to be. She was intelligent, logical, funny, and caring. She was my best friend.

My mom was my number one hero. I lost her in '92 and still miss her terribly. As for the present I'd have to say our troops. Agree or disagree with the wars they are fighting, you have to give them respect for the awful job they are sent to do.
