I don't really think Americans are arrogant. I think a lot of Americans are really embarrassed by that stereotype and don't really know where it came from or how to eradicate it. It is possible that there are annoying American tourists that visit other countries and expect to eat only American-style foods and speak English. But, honestly, I've never met one of these people before, and whenever anyone I knows travels anywhere from the states, they try to learn as much of the language as they can to get by, really try to appreciate the culture and respect the customs.

I hope the image you see will change... most of us are not arrogant, but pretty humble in my opinion.

Yes, Americans are more arrogant than they were, say, thirty years ago. (I am an American, born in 1962.)

I blame our leadership. Since the end of the cold war, the U.S. has been the only remaining superpower (with China catching up fast) and has turned into a swaggering bully. A lot of Americans are very humble and considerate of others, but they're always overshadowed by the obnoxious flag-waving jingoists.

BTW, check out the 1972 Randy Newman song, "Political Science." It's a hilarious satire of the Ugly American:

No one likes us-I don't know why
We may not be perfect, but heaven knows we try
But all around, even our old friends put us down
Let's drop the big one and see what happens

We give them money-but are they grateful?
No, they're spiteful and they're hateful
They don't respect us-so let's surprise them
We'll drop the big one and pulverize them

Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot
And Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us

We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin', too

Boom goes London and boom Paree
More room for you and more room for me
And every city the whole world round
Will just be another American town
Oh, how peaceful it will be
We'll set everybody free
You'll wear a Japanese kimono
And there'll be Italian shoes for me

They all hate us anyhow
So let's drop the big one now
Let's drop the big one now

As you can see, American bigotry is not new, but I do think it's louder than ever.

Not all Americans. But, I would say that what leads to arrogance, is usually ignorance. Americans are taught from the cradle, that they are the best in the world in everything. Unfortunately, that is what leads to this attitude of arrogance. For instance, just because you have the biggest gun, it doesn't mean that you are the smartest. Look what is happening in Iraq. Americans invaded that country thinking that just because they had the biggest gun they could win. That is lack of humility, typical arrogance that has cost many lives. Americans need to take their kids abroad and not just to Disney and to see there is a whole universe out there. Welcome to the other continents friends. Perhaps, a good start would be to teach kids geography so they can locate others countries in the hemisphere.

I agree we are all human but your generalizing the American culture. There are many of us that believe that we are all equal and treat people that way.

American's are not the only culture that base socialization by color, nationality, social status, sex, money, backgrounds etc. Most of the Europeans give the hard labor jobs to Africans in South Africa.

If your talking about American tourist, you may have just come across one bad apple in the bushel of American tourist. I know if I was going to a country overseas, I'd do my best to learn the language. Just like the fact that I would like everyone who is in another country learn English if they plan to visit or stay in the United States.

So why just focus on the U.S.?

Oh yes, Americans are really arrogant. (My case, just check all of the other answers! "We're the richest, smartest, Other nations are dumb" etc.)
Even I get arrogant sometimes. Sure, Americans are talented, But it doesn't mean that the other nations have to kiss our a** all the while we're kicking their a**.
You wanna see arrogance? Just look outside your door. Americans are the most arrogant people i know. But i'm not saying that EVERYONE in america is arrogant. just MOST of us. (note that i said "us". I'm not excluding myself of this.)
Other nations are arrogant too, the but rate in this country is sky high.

I don't think it is arrogance, I think it is stupidity. National test scores are a joke to other countries. But people go around like they know everything (case in point, Yahoo Answers, where wrong information is routinely given Best Answer). So we all look like arrogant fools to the rest of the world.

Americans are extremely arrogant, as a whole.

I mean, come on... we have a president who told a bunch of brainwashed radical extremist who hate us and will do anything in their power to destroy us to "bring it on."

What does that tell you?

Character is what makes a person good, not social status.

They are already as arrogant as being the richest, most fortunate country on the face of the Earth can be.

I wish I were one of them!

(Of course most of this good fortune lies on the backs of the generations preceding the baby boomers...)

We're becoming more arrogant because the rest of the world is becoming stupider.

I certainly am. Although I don't think that it has much to do with me being an American. It is more because I am just so .... good looking and ... well, really talented.
