Actually the best world player - according with FIFA WC and Golden Ball award ranking, having Zidane retired - is captain Cannavaro. And this is my pick.
He played 7 match - every minute from start to the end, never replaced. Having 2 match ended in e.t. he collects 690' played.
He was GREAT in every match. Italy failed against USA and AUS, with unimpressive playing. He has never failed.
He was outstanding in his box, fighting on every ball and never had a yellow card. His responsibilities become harder when Nesta - rated as one of the world best defenders - was out by injury since 3rd match.
Cannavaro was so far the best tournament player.
It's usual to have some trouble in spotting it out great plays performed by defenders. I guess many of us perfectly remember Del Piero's goal at 121' against Germany,
It was the best (and a perfect one) WC fast break attack (Italy rules in this kind of plays), but few noticed how it begins... here's a link to watch what Cannavaro does ;-)
At 121' when Italy was winning...
Take a look and enjoy it.

For me, it was Cannavaro. He was outstanding all through the tournament leading by example and helping to inspire Italy to progress to the finals and win the World Cup. ZZ and Klose were also very good.
By the way, why are people answering this question with pointless comments like "who cares" etc. What's the point in answering if you don't care? Could it be that you just want the points?

Mr. Posh (David Beckham)
But honestly, most people here in North America don't care about soccer. It's not really a popular proffesional sport here. It's more of a kids thing.
Maybe post this question in the UK Answers page, or another european country's answers page.

The referees (sarcasm)!!! No, i think Cannavaro or Christiano Ronaldo but, being an aussie, i enjoyed watching Lucas Neill and Harry Kewell.

Cannavaro from Italy. It was ridiculous that he, the leader of the champion team, was not named Most Outstanding Player.
Andrea Pirlo, also from Italy, was outstanding as well.

Cannavaro, Italy's tournament was based on the twin rocks Cannavaro and Buffon.
I prefer Cannavaro because Buffon did not have that much to do thanks to Cannavaro. His positioning was excellent, and the rare times he needed them, his recovery tackles were superb.
