Superman is the man, but he will be owned. He can barely defeat Darkseid one on one, and Thanos is arguably stronger, especially since he cant die. Plus, Thanos fights foes that are stronger then him for a living. That is what he does. He finds an insurmountable task, then after he completes it, he destroys everything and starts anew. Supes is strong, but Thanos has beaten The Champion and the other elders of the Universe. He has beaten The In-Betweener, an agent of Lord Chaos and Master Order. He has beaten the heralds of Galactus, The Beyonder, Gladiator, Thor, Titans and Eternals, and fought Adam Warlok and his doppelganger the Magus. He has defeated all with skill, strength, cunnign, and sheer power all without the gems that so many like to put on him like a crutch.

Superman is capable of beating Thanos, but he would have an awfully hard time to beat someone with the sheer power of Darkseid adn the ruthlessness of Lex Luthor. Supes will be crushed repeatedly till he gets help, gets lucky, of Thanos lets him win.

Thanos would win. Physically Superman has an edge, although I'm not sure exactly how much, there is no easy way to compare the 2. Neither Marvel nor DC puts the strength of their characters into simple measurements. Superman has a huge weakness though (kryptonite) while Thanos has no major weakness that could be exploited. Superman comes with more abilites overall, but when you have an easily exploited achilles heel, it doesn't matter how much you can do. Thanos' biggest asset would be the fact that he's a ruthless mastermind. He would never allow himself to face Superman mano y mano. He's plot from the background for a while and only come forward when he had the upper hand. He also doesn't generally fall into the same trap as most masterminds, he doesn't explain his plan while it's still on going. He'd get his hands onto some kryptonite before he ever faced Supes. He managed to get his hands on all the infinity gems, so getting some kryptonite wouldn't be all that challenging for him. He's ruthless enough that once Supe was down, he'd make sure to finish him off. He doesn't have any personal feelings towards him, so he wouldn't keep him around to gloat. He'd finish him off, and move on to his next target.

Thanos is incredibly durable, and he is strong. Very strong. That being said, Superman is stronger, faster, and he is smarter. Perhaps not as durable as the Mad Titan, but he is the more impressive specimen. Above all else, Superman can fly. All he has to do after trading blows with Thanos for a bit is destroy his Sanctuary, then hit him faster than the speed of sound, propelling him out of the atmosphere into zero gravity. Then Superman has his way with him. People argue that Thanos is too durable and can't be beaten, even if Superman is the more physically dominant. That's a solid argument, except the fact that many of the Marvel characters have bested the Titan multiple times. Nova, Starlord, the Avengers... Spider-Man beat him single-handedly, and he, nor are the other aforementioned heroes, isn't anywhere near the foe that the Man of Steel would be. With the Infinity Gauntlet, it would end differently, but in a raw duel Superman would reign supreme. (Especially Superboy Prime)

I love these bloody fan boy comments supes always wins end of discussion. Seriously Silver Surfer can and has mopped the floor with Superman he would just absorb him like a black hole would a star then think about what Thanos did to Surfer and there's your answer. Without the gauntlet i still think Thanos has the win but not with as much ease as people think mind you Surfer and Thanos powers are not really the same and i think if Surfer could wipe out Superman as it has been done by him before more than once to every edition of superman then i'd believe that Thanos could evil or not isn't the point. Look at the fan boy crap that Batman killed Superman now he is unstoppable be serious here Batman would find the likes of Daredevil a slight challenge even if he takes the win it's just like that too much hype study science more before questioning powers as they're science and i don't see heavy hitters that rely on yellow stars defeating unlimited comic god like beings with brute strength.

I think it would be one hell of a fight, especially if Thanos did not have any Infinity Gems, so it would be on a purely physical level.
Superman would prevail, but would need a nice long vacation afterwards.
But if Thanos did have any of the Infinity Gems, then it would be a more questionable outcome.
