Do you travel? I find it is not so much what you look for as it is where you go. If you visit a city and find an activity like a club/concert, museum/store, or some kind of event that interests you than you'll meet like minds.

Also, finding an organization dealing with your favorite topics works too. There are book clubs, civil war societies, and user groups all over the place. These people are gathering over the premise they share common interests. Whether it is on-line or in church- somebody is interested in the same things you are.

The best method in getting involved is going out!
