Not just the door, but also the area around the door?
It's very old and weak with paint practically cracking everywhere.

Thanks to everyone who answers!

If you go to a store such as home depot or lowes, you can walk through the door section and look at all sorts of doors to get an idea of what you like. Most front doors are "prehung", that is where they include the frame around the door. Installation cost is between $500 and $1000, depends. The cost of the door itself can range from $400 to $2000. Depends on how fancy you want.

Last fall we had a new front door installed. We have a double door, so had to order that type. I got one with cut glass on the front, and it is very, very pretty when the sun shines through the glass. My total cost was about $1800 including installation.

You can buy wood, metal, or fiberglass doors. You can buy them stainable or paintable. You can buy them already stained/painted (more expensive) or do the finishing yourself.

A plain metal door is the least expensive of the lot. Put a tiny window in it and it's a tad more. Hardwood doors are the most expensive. We got fiberglass, with a stainable finish that once stained, looks like wood.

Those stores only carry a few doors, but have catalogs with hundreds to choose from.

Since the installation cost is the same, the variation is in the door you choose. I recommend you buy the prettiest, nicest door you can afford, as it will make your house entry beautiful and the resale value will be better. I absolutely love my cut glass door, and can't imagine living in a new house without such a pretty door. I know, it sounds silly, but that door makes a huge difference in how the house now looks from the street.

When you choose your door, you get to choose the color of the hinges (brass vs. silver color). If you get cut glass, you get to choose the color of the metal hinges, door knob, metal around the glass, and so on.

Heck, you even chose the color to stain or paint the door.

You might find this hard to believe, but from personal experience I have learned that labor to install the door might cost just as much as the door itself. It's not easy to hang a door properly... any book at the library will show numerous things to do and to be careful about. Depending on the quality of door and the materials in the door, you could spend as little as $200 to install a screen door... but you're talking area around a door, so that adds at least another $100. I've seen good quality doors installed for $1000 or more... those are some doors!

If you mean to change the entire door frame and door? If no stucco/siding work is needed, then the breakdown would be: new prehung door. ranges from $200-$1500. Prime paint and finish paint., misc. materials (i.e. nails) , and a COMPETENT carpenter for 2 1/2 days labor including finish painting. I would say anywhere from $900 to $1800 before the prehung door. Remember, you generally get what you pay for. Materials and labor included.

Check with your local home centers as prices vary from county to county state to state. What I would consider an outrageous price could be an average or good price in your area. Entrance doors usually will come complete already hung on the hinges inside the frame.
