A lot of kids get a telescope as a present because they think its cool. But it needs skill to use, and it is pointless getting one for astronomy unless you know your way around the sky.

Before anyone gets a telescope, get a star atlas and learn where everything is. Learn where the planets are at any given time.

Get some binoculars first. You can identify a lot of nebulae and other objects with a decent pair of binoculars, and they are much easier to use. Telescopes have a much more restricted field of view, requiring some skill in locating tiny objects in the sky.

Learn the sky for a year in this way. If you last the year and still keen, get a telescope.

Otherwise, it is going to be a 5 minute wonder.
