i would visit a "comfort" shoe store. Deisel makes some really fun shoes that are heals.
My advice, is if it hurts, don't wear them! wear flipflops when walking and carry your heals in a bag so you can switch shoes! i leave my heals at work, and do all my to/from work walking in sneakers/flipflops.
i don't think expensive equals comfort. I use arch supports in my heals which seems to help. and i love sexy shoes... but i make sure that i am balanced in them properly. a lot of gorgeous shoes just don't make any sense from a physics standpoint!
good luck with your heals!

I am a high heel addict so I know where you're coming from - the thing about high heels is that they do really hurt.
the pain you get in the ball of your foot ios the worst as it burns and hurts at the same time. to avoid it, look out for expensive shoes - generally, the more expensive the make of the shoe, the better padded they are in that area - and it really does make a difference.
Also don't buy any shoes that have too thin a sole (and no cushoning in the bit that is closest to the floor) as this will also hurt after prologed wear.
I think you might like this site as they have original shoes with heels that aren't too high:
www.spiceshu.co.uk
and I'm sure you'll get back into it - it's like riding a bike:)

I agree VERY MUCH with 2 of the answers already written. For One, Mahnolo Blahniks are about the most expensive AND the most comfortable shoes ever made. I personally love high heels and usually wear a three to four inch heel.
Here are some things that you could try.
First, I believe that Dr. Scholl's has just come out with a new insole for heels so that they are more comfortable to wear. I have been looking for these but have not yet found them in my small city.
Second, try a Wedge Heel. These are more sturdy underneath your foot, and give you more than just a skinny heel to balance on. Instead, they give you the entirety of the shoe to balance on, making it all much easier. And, they are TOTALLY back in style!!!
Third and Finally, Heels are not worn for comfort, as hard as we try to find comfy shoes. "Killer Heels" will always eventually hurt after over maybe 2 hours of walking around in them. I have become used to it and my mantra is always something I heard long ago. "You have to suffer to be beautiful". Yes, heels are bad for our feet and years from now we will regret it but Frankly - WHO CARES!!! Look Fabulous and get you heel on girl!!!!!
Good Luck

Aerosoles, Easy Spirit, and Naturlizer all are shoe makers that make shoes for comfort. Check their websites for specials, etc. Also, try a kitten heel, as it adds a little height without the hurt. A kitten heel is usually only a 1/2 inch to inch high, super chic and "wearable." Also, for comfort, you may want to stay away from stilletos, as they push your foot towards the front of the shoe and create a great sense of pain to your feet. Try wearing heels that are a bit wider (which is great, because "thicker" heels are coming back "in" this fall). If you simply can't find a killer shoe with a great, thicker heel, opt for the smaller heels, but invest in the Dr. Scholl's gel insoles. They are a bit thick, but work GREAT in heels! Hope I've helped!

If you want to go for the fancy schmancy stuff...Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choos are fabulous. They are beautiful shoes with a lot of comfort. I'm only 5'1 so I really love the heels on those babies!
If you want something more affordable and that won't make a dent in your wallet, I'd suggest Franko Sarto. The shoes are very nice looking AND they are comfortable. They look chic without giving you the "old lady" retirement heel look.
When buying heels that you are going to be standing in for a long time, remember to buy rubber soles because those will lessen the strain on your feet and legs and make walking a lot less painful!
Happy Trails!

The trick is to build up to wearing high heels, gradually increase the size of of your heel start from a kitten heel and when you are totally comfy in them then move up to a slightly bigger heel and so on until you get to a size heel you are happy with. Good luck.

Look for Wedgy heels for a start before you wear high stilettos.
Also look for extra padded on the inside sole to add comfort.

I would say get a pair that gives you good support around the whole foot i.e. not sandals. It will make it easier on your balance and on doesn't strain your feet as much.
