Republicans supposedly believe in the pre-eminence of the law - that we are a land of laws to which all are subject. Yet, the Republicans are in court arguing to get Tom Delay's name off the ballot for his Congressional District. As you may know Delay withdrew from the race amid corruption allegations. However, a judge has declared that "law" prohibits another Republican candidate from qualifying for the Republican candidacy occupied by Delay. The Republicans argue that having "choice" on the ballot is the best way to assure the democratic tradition. Yet, just two short years ago in my Congressional District 5 of Louisiana, Democratic Congressman Rodney Alexander switched to the Republican Party with only minutes remaining for qualifying a candidate. That assured that our district had no choice in the race, as the Democrats were unable to find a strong candidate in a few minutes. Are they not only being anti-republic, but also a tad bit hypocritical?? What are your thoughts?

this why its so important to see where a candidate is drawing his/her money support from the......... tell-tale signs were there you guys should, ve know.........Alexander, who ran as a Democrat to win his first congressional term but voted along conservative lines, had remained a Democrat Wednesday when he registered at the start of qualifying. At the time he said, "I'm not ashamed to be a Democrat, but I vote what I think the people of the 5th District want me to represent."

Alexander said Friday he had been struggling with his conservative votes for two years — backing the Bush tax cuts as well as the war in Iraq — and noted they had brought him criticism from Democrats.

"I just decided it would be best for me to switch parties, that I would be more effective in the 5th District in the state of Louisiana as a Republican," he said.

In Washington, Democrats reacted angrily.

"Rodney Alexander has betrayed voters in Louisiana and leaders like (Senators) John Breaux and Mary Landrieu (search), who have helped him. We have no use for turncoats like Rodney Alexander in the new Democratic majority," said Kori Bernards, spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

(

Alexander's decision leaves House Republicans with 229 seats to 205 for the Democrats with one Democratic-leaning independent. With the switch, Democrats must now gain 12 seats this fall to win the majority.

There is another strong Republican in the three-candidate field: Jock Scott, a former state representative from Alexandria. The remaining Democrat is Zelma "Tisa" Blakes, of Monroe, a political newcomer who called herself a "domestic engineer" when she qualified on Wednesday.

Asked if the party will get behind a political unknown, state Democratic Party chairman Mike Skinner said officials will explore all possible options.

Under the unique Louisiana open primary system, all candidates run on the same ballot regardless of party. If no one gets more than half the vote on Nov. 2, a runoff will be held in December.

Breaux, called Alexander's switch an underhanded maneuver that "effectively prevented the people of his district from a having a choice."

So where was your outrage when NJ Dems replaced Bob Torricelli with Frank Lautenburg at the last minute? Delay should be off the ballot because he left Texas. How is that being Anti republic? How can you have a choice with only a Democratic candidate running? Your question makes no sense............

At this point, everyone has completely lost sight of anything resembling a republic. All we do is fight and scream and tear at each other and because of this idiot internet all the freaks come out and scream a little louder. I long for the 60's and 70's and 80's when all this arguing and fighting went on in the back rooms instead of on the front freaking porch where all the neighbors (by that I mean rest of the world for those of you without thumbs) can watch.

Absolutely. They have lost sight of the fact that a republic is a form of democracy for the ppl, by the ppl. It is not a dictatorship where just because you constituents vote you in, that gives you the right to ignore the ones who didn't vote for you.
