Why is it mainly 3d animated movies in theatres. When I was four Disney had movies like "The Lion King" and Beauty and the Beast." They also had stuff like the Alladin series. They were beautifully animated and the artwork was very well drawn out. Now I mainly watch anime movies because they aren't in 3d format throughout the whole movie or not at all.

Why is it that there are only 3d animated movies in theatres these days and they pop up so fast now.

CG animation is the popular form of animation due to the extreme success not only of Pixar Studios/Disney, but also videogames that have spent so much time and money showing the possibilities of CG (Squaresoft-Final Fantasy, for example). But, although this style exists now, and everyone (Dreamworks) wants on that Pixar bandwagon. It is so sad to see the old animators pretty much out of a job because of this. Even anime is using CG backgrounds, etc. I love both styles, but people are only going to invest in CG, because it has done so many wonders for special effects, landscapes, and family movies.

BUT, at least some are sticking to experimental animation (A Scanner Darkly).

It's just a phase, as was 3D movies in the fifties. Sure they were fun at the time, but people went back to the standard movie.
Maybe one day, the 3D animation, may look good, but still a ways to go to beat the standard 2D versions, from Disney of old.
Sadly, they were pretty expensive, but aren't most movies now.
Lets hope they go back soon.
It all depends on how much the studios earn from this latest batch, its after all, about the money.

Be patient. I've also noticed this recently, especially after seening an intro of a video game (http://youtube.com/watch?v=OYLQjDAP8ik&search=sonic%20riders). The intro was in classic 2d animation, and I thought, "Wow, you sure don't see these often nowdays. All the animation is movies and video games are now done in CG"
I have a feeling that, when CG technology is so advanced that you really can't tell it from the real thing (I'm guessing about 8 years from now), I think people will want to start to go back to 2d animation.
