Here is a short list of bands that you must hear.
Stereolab
Sonic Youth
Blonde Redhead
Eric's Trip
The Stooges
The Jam
The Sex Pistols
The New York Dolls
Televsion
The White Stripes
The Dirtbombs
Bad Brains
THere are so many more too, I think that you should seek out quality music at all times. Disposable crap music is not worth listening to, I mean life is too short to listen to really trendy and bad music. Take the time to study the history of rock amd it's many avant garde sidepaths. If you listen to bands that have stood the test of time, and understand rock history themselves, it will become clear which new bands will be timeless too. Just my 2 penny worth.

I'm going to list a song from each genre you listed above. See if you can find them on Napster because you can listen to the whole song for free there. Otherwise towerrecords.com has more song clips than anyone I've run across yet. Here's my list, hope you like it:
Rock: Take it as it Comes - The Doors
Techno: Busy Child - The Crystal Method
Punk: Beat on the Brat - The Ramones
Alternative: All Night Long - Peter Murphy
Emo: Let's Talk Turkey - Ima Robot
Ska: Girl Take it Easy - The Pie Tasters

Check out BoDeans they've been around since 1986. The only song most people know by them is Closer To Free it was the theme song for the TV show Party of Five. I recommand their first album Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams. They have a style of music that's all their own. Funny story Sheryl Crow actually opened for them, and look where she's at now.
