It can mean a few different things.
If you are reading tablature, it indicates the G-string. If you are looking at chord notations, it means a basic G-major chord.
It also could mean a note that is bent up to a G from some lower note.
It's hard to tell what it means without seeing the tabs you are looking at.

"Give a little bit" is in the key of D... Here's a good article about the original song and how to play it.

Depends on the context, but probably refers to the note, chord or string. I'd be inclined to say the chord, as I know that song uses a 'G' chord.
