Personal preference:
Arabs- showy, sensitive, can go all day, wonderful characters-lots of spunk

Thoroughbreds: Athletic & powerful, love people, can go all day

Quarter Horses: Compact and powerful, intelligent, take everything in their stride, good doers

Andalusians: Powerful and brave, passionate, and characters

I've always like these breeds: American Quarter Horse, Mustang, American Paint, Thoroughbred, American Saddlebred, Appaloosas, Arabian. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of those horses. I've pretty much worked with all of those breeds and can say they are very versatile and would make a great horse for anyone. Maybe you can go look at the horses up for adoption from a humane society. Most of those horses are very sweet and need a second chance at a happy home. Also the breeds I listed are common to find in the united states. Hope you find a wonderful horse.

First of all get a horse that has been there done that. Is broke and not spooky. This way you can build up your confidence. It's good if your age plus your horses age adds up to at least 25.

I'd reccomend getting a gelding since they don't go through heat, are very consistant, and aren't moody, you can alway expect the same horse.

A Quarter Horse is a great breed of horse to get. They are known for being very versatile and loyal. They are strong and willing, and can do just about anything you ask.

Breeds I would reccoment definatly not getting are...
Arabians, gaited horses, appaloosa's...These breeds are known for being high strung and very sprited.

Once you are a confidente rider and know what your doing these breeds can be just as fun and great as the next, but they really aren't cut out to be first time horses.

one that fits you and compliments you. the reason is if you two get along and he is within your capability to handle most of the time, then you will encounter less resistance and fewer problems. Nothing is worse than finding that you and your horse got along at first and then started countering training problems and now you are at war with each other. It makes riding and even just seeing your horse toruture and no fun at all. I have been through this once and have experienced something similar with my new horse but he isnt too bad.

Any horse that you can properly register as a Hunter. Best confirmation there is. Good for everything, bad at nothing.

The Morgan. It's kind of a work-horse/riding horse combo and can run really well and has lots of stamina.

I say the quarter horse because they are really quick but I like them because I barrel race and pole bend.

Quarter Horses are good first horses, because they are not high strung and they can jump very good and are very patient.
