No. To ban them from getting married is to use the same mindless, pointless, hurtful and morally wrong "logic" that people used to discriminate against women, blacks, Native Americans, or any other group. People can use the Bible as a means to "justify" their ignorant and hateful prejudices against anyone (women are inferior to men so they shouldn't have equal rights, Native Americans are "God-less savages" so it is OK to kill them and steal their land, etc...) but as with each issue in the past, it has fallen to a more civilized and educated understanding of the world. Gays are people to. Science has just about proved that it is an inborn way of life for them to be gay, it isn't a "perverse choice" they make. Let them have the same rights that every other American loves, it's only right, it's only fair.

No I Don't Think Gay Marriage Should Be Banned...Who Are We To Tell People Who They Love And Who They Are Able...It Doesn't Seem Right That A Man And A Woman Can Be Married With No Problem But When A Two Guys Or Two Women Want To Marry It's Consdiered Wrong.. I Mean Seriously Who Are We To Judge..That Is What Is Wrong With Society..They Are Too Many People Out There That Judge Others And Worry Too Much About Reputation Than Anything Else...I Mean Come On Don't Deny People Love Just Because They Are Different...American is A Melting Pot And The Gay Community is Part of What Makes Us Diverse...We Are Also Known For Being A Free Country..If We Ban This Marriage We Are Violating The Very Rights We Fought For..And It Doesn't Seem Right..People Should Focus A Little Less On Gay Marriage And A Little More On The Destructive Road We Are Going Down...Sadly The Definition Of Marriage Is That Of A Union Of A man And A Woman...But Things Change And I Think The Definition Should Change As Well...And Everyone Should Be Given The Oppurtunity To Love Freely And Be Married..

Um, gay marriage already is banned almost everywhere in America: I think the question is you're trying to ask is whether more states in America should unban it, or not?

My vote would be to unban it; a gay couple who get married rather than just living together are not harming anyone else (offending some people isn't the same as harming them), and I don't see how "Congress shall make no law promoting an institute of religion" is compatible with Congress taking sides with those priests and religions that don't allow gay marriage and against those priests and religions that do allow it. The current law is clearly taking sides on a religious issue, and that's flat-out unconstitutional. It's not (just) a civil rights issue, it's a freedom of religion issue. No-one wants Congress to have the power to make laws saying that their religion is wrong, and that's why the founding fathers put this freedom in the Consitution.

No. There is no valid secular reason for doing so, and we should not make laws based on the Bible. But a friend pointed out to me once that the Bible says "Thou shalt not kill," so does that mean we should make murder legal too? And I said that we as a society are against murder (including atheists and other religions), so we don't ban murder SOLELY based on the Bible.

And for those of you who say "we need to protect the sacred institution of marriage between a man and a woman," who ever said anything about banning straight marriage? And to those of you who say "this will put an end to families," how will it do this? Will your family be disbanded if gay marriage is allowed to continue?

Come to think of it, why does marriage have legal significance anyway? Isn't marriage a religious institution? Why don't we just make it so that marriage doesn't mean anything?

I believe it to be in the best interest of the US to ban gay marriage on the basis to preserve the institution of marriage and the family as the fundamental unit of society. I would support civil unions under the law and never understood why the gay community wants the title so bad.

Yes, for logical reasons. Although we should let them go down an aisle and make any committment they want, we shouldn't allow it as a "legal" marriage. Here's why (and no, I'm not homophobic, and no, I don't hate gays).

If you're going to allow gays to marry, then to be "fair" you have to allow bisexuals to marry. Which would be one of each. Then to be "fair" you have to allow polygamists to marry. Eventually the whole concept of marriage and family falls apart.

Basically, I think gays should pretty much be able to do what they want, including moving in next door to me. They're not bothering anyone, so why should I care? But we're only going to complicate things needlessly by doing legal gay marriages. Then we'd have to contend with gay divorces, etc. The courts are already having trouble keeping up. My question is......why do the gays "need" a legal marriage so bad?

In the states that have passed gay marriages . . . the gay divorces are already proceeding. Looks to me like lawyers have the most to gain from these relationships. I have never been clear why a marriage license provides more than most of the anti-discrimination laws do.

No if two people who love each other want to get married. They should be allowed to. It should not matter if they are the same sex. Who are we to judge them? If it is truly a sin God will deal with that when they die.
