Anime is so cool but I really would like to know it's origins.

As another answerer posted, yes it began back post worldwar2 with betty boop, the big eyes being one of the biggest influences. As to why it became so popular in the states, everyones opinions vary, but I will go back to robotech, the series that got me started so many years ago. Back then, it was pretty much gijoe or robotech to watch on tv, on one hand we had a bunch of american heroes who couldn't hit the broad side of the barn, and stories were fully contained in one single episode, so that you could watch in any order almost and never know it. Robotech on the other hand, was actually story driven, it had a story arc that went over many episodes, that and we had things like important characters dying, series changing events, ect. vs the vapid any order gijoe, robotech for me won hands down.
Over the years, anime was on the back burner, but then I got a part time job, and started renting/collecting anime, mostly it was go to blockbuster and grab whatever was interesting looking, I was impressed with the humor in some series, and loved it, I was also greatly impressed that some anime covered very dark and adult topics, and that there wasn't always a happy ending (unlike the spew that was churned out for kids at the time)
Over the years, anime started to become more popular slowly in the states, and a few shows here and there started to show up, as the momentum grew, american tv was starting to be affected by anime as well. you started to see shows with a bit more adult humor, some with lots of adult humor, and story driven cartoons as well. Animaniacs was one of my favorite shows when it was on, so much humor that only adults would get, while still being slapstick enough for kids to be completely in love with it too.
Currently, Anime is wildly popular in the united states, Japan's culture of cool is thier biggest export, even non anime series have taken many hints from the japanese style and have gone story driven, I just wish that some anime series wouldn't get so butchered in translation to make them all but unwatchable to the die hard fans. One Piece for example was competely butchered in translation, and detective conan was as well (case closed in the states) and while naruto is ok dubbed, it really shines in the original japanese.

I'm no expert, but I heard Kimba the White Lion and Astroboy were the budding toons way across the sea. They're big cartoonish eyes were based loosely on Fliescher's Betty Boop and related characters.
Why's it so popular? I don't know. Because anime is kind of... cheaply made so there are alot of them and plenty to go around?

actually alot of people that know alot more about me on this topic say that anime in japan actually started with betty boop, apparently they started emulating the style and ran with it. You can still see some of the "Big Eye" boop style in some of the current anime stuff.

I'd say the early 80's with cartoons like speed racer,,jayce and the wheeled warriors and He-man...i loved those shows.MTV made it popular with their adult anime of aeon flux.

personally i think its because of tokyo tv then the tv stations like cartoon networks or smthing i forgot heard how popullar it is in tokyo so they brought some and aired it and a lot of ppl watched it so they brought more and more. another thing might be the manga/comics. most people enjoy reading comics other than novels cuz they are shorter and there are pics. i personally like comics better cuz of that.
