Limewire is the way to go for free music.
To download music to your IPod
1)you must save your music to your pc. make a folder for the music label it and put or drag all your music into it.
2) Install Itunes before plugging in your Ipod
3) Open Itunes and in the upper left hand corner where it says file click it and select Add folder to library. Search for the folder where your music is saved and click ok
4) Click on Library which is located on the left side of itunes and all your music should show up there. Organize your music into playlists, adjust volume levels and equalizer settings if you choose.
5)Plug in your Ipod and it will ask you to update all music from library automatically, update music from selected playlists or update manually. If you want all the music in your library to go onto your Ipod then choose the first option. After that once everything has finished downloading onto your IPod. You are set to go

ipods can only hold mp3 or aac files. if you have any other songs just import them into itunes. otherwise, you can buy them on itunes for .99 each or download the two or three free ones they have each week on itunes. when you hook up your ipod, the ipod should automatically any new content considering you have set it to automatically update. otherwise when you see the ipod in the source list in itunes, select and drag any songs you want onto the ipod's icon.

I use bearshare.com and all of the songs go straight to my itunes library so that I can put them on my ipod. Limewire is supposed to do the same thing but I've used bearshare for years.
