Why do so many MLB teams put people on the 15 day DL for something that will certainly take longer than 15 days? Why are some players still on a 15 day DL dating back to the beginning of the season? Can someone explain the intricacies of this please?

A player on the 15 day disabled list can be reactivated anytime after 15 days. A player on the 60 day list must sit out 60 days.

Firstly, there are no 30-day disabled lists. Secondly, there is no limit in the number of players a team may place on either the 15- or the 60-day disabled lists.

As a background, teams have a 40-man roster, of which 25 players may be on the Major League roster at anytime (the rest may play in the minors). When a team places an injured player on the 15-day disabled list, they may call up any player on their 40-man roster onto their Major League roster. The injured player must stay on the 15-day disabled list for at least 15 days, retroactive to the last game they played in (not necessary when he was placed on the DL), but he may stay for as long as he wants after the 15 days.

The reason why teams place players with relatively major injuries on the 60-day DL rather than the 15-day DL and have the option to bring him back at any time is that a player on the 60-day DL is not considered to be part of the 40-man roster. Thus, the team may add a player (newly signed free agent, player from a trade, waivers, etc.) without having to drop someone from it.

I hope this answers your question.

If a team thinks the player will return within 60 days they will put him on the 15 day even if they might be out 4 like 40. What the dl does is once u place a player on it u cant take them off untill however many days they r suppose to be on it are over. But while they r on it it opens up a spot on the roster to bring a minor leager up to replace him and not have to send anyone down

These are the players that are out indefinitely.

The 15 day DL gives the team the luxury of activating, the player once he is able to play. This also allows the team to put the player into a rehab stint as soon as possible.

Also, teams are only allowed to place a certain number of players on the 15 day, 30 day and 60 day DL. I think you are allowed three players per DL (so nine in total). If they have too many injured players, they must remove players off their 40-man roster.
