if you suspect they may steal. Do the customers you follow or watch tend to be a certain race, religion, sex, etc.?

I run a small video store in a little town and before we opened I carefully planned to remove all temptation of stealing. All my movie cases are empty and all the candy and soda and snacks are behind the counter.

I don't follow my customers around - no one likes to be followed around in a store. Even when I worked in larger retail environments, I would never do that. The stores that I've worked in that were very large had security systems and security officers so there was never a need for that - and all the smaller stores I've worked in were so small that you could see and watch everyone from the counter.

I'm 59 years old, been on both ends, I say Hello, how are you today to greet, let the customer rest a bit, look around. Unless assigned to you, your job is sales rather than security, then clarify the job assignment, otherwise !
