Along time ago one of my friends told me that the rings on the cigarette paper was gunpowder to keep the cigarette burning. Is this true? Wouldn't inhaling gunsmoke be deadly? Is that what makes cigarettes deadly, if it is true? I didn't know what other category to put this under. I tried Google searching, but to no avail.

The rings aren't gun powder, the tobacco gets chemicals put in it so that it will burn longer. The rings are water marks so the cigarette paper burns evenly. Next time watch a cigarette burn, you can see the paper burn up to the ring until the burning tobacco catches up to it, then the paper will burn up to the next ring.

PS If you still smoke, quit smoking. If you don't smoke, don't start.
Just think of all the tumors that could be in your lungs.

The Cigarette Papers

If they were gunpowder, I would have exploded years ago!
NO, they aren't gunpowder, they are there to strengthen the paper holding the tobacco. Ever seen rolling papers *real ones* without lines? If they were filled with gunpowder, you could hit a pack of rolling papers with a hammer and you would get a real bang out of it, LOL! Go ahead, Try it!

I am pretty sure the Government doesn't allow this, so don't buy from Indian Reservations.

In reality your friend is uninformed. The rings are a watermark. There are other chemicals in the tobacco to keep it burning, but no explosives (at least at the concentration found in cigarettes)

It's not gunpowder. You'd notice if it was gunpowder: it would make the cigarette burn very, very quickly, with a much larger flame.

Heh-heh, probably would've been better for you simply to ask _what_ they're made of, rather than specifically mentioning gunpowder ;)

No, gunpowder is not in a cigarette, if it was, it would explode when you lit it. The rings are there to hide that fact that there are holes in the paper. They are there so you can't see the holes in the paper.

the reason you couldn't find any information by googling was because this isn't true.

The reason tobacco is deadly is because it contains over 3,000 chemicals, 68 of which are known to cause cancer. The tobacco companies also add other chemicals to enhance the flavor and effect of the tobacco. One of the ingredients they add is urea, which is a chemical identical to urine. The reason they add urea is because the urea makes the tobacco taste more "toasty" when burned. That means that smokers are basically inhaling pee when they enjoy that toasty flavor. Yummy!
