I am running a summer camp for kids aged 8-12 and the theme is related to espionage, kinda 007ish. i want to build a safe fake bomb for them to disarm, but i want it to look realistic and to actually react ("blow-up") if they pull the wrong wire or push the wrong button or something... baking soda and vinegar was kinda messy and not a big enuf explosion, and mentos and coke would be too hard to set up to look like a bomb... i'm lost, PLEASE HELP!

A science teacher of mine did something like this when I was in eighth grade...not as elaborate as what you are talking about though. He used a box filled with balloons, not round but the kind you make animals out of.... if we pressed the wrong switch a pin popped some of the balloons, harmless but loud enough to make us jump.

Not a big enough explosion? Do you have insurance? If these kids are actually going to be leaning over this thing - you do NOT want it to really explode even with household stuff. The mentos and diet coke thing can take eyes out it it goes off right....
How about you just stand over them, and say "BOOOOM!" really sharply if they do the wrong wire? They'll jump, I garuntee it.

why on earth would you be teaching this sort of subject to children???????? With all the war on at the moment you must be really short of ideas to teach children useful things. This totally defeats the purpose of preschools banning any toys with guns or toy guns etc, for them then to go to school and learn worse things. Dont you think our kids need to learn about the great things in our society.......

Get a balloon and fill with backing soda and vingar. fill with food coloring for better looking explosion.
