I am running a summer camp for kids aged 8-12 and the theme is related to espionage, kinda 007ish. i want to build a safe fake bomb for them to disarm, but i want it to look realistic and to actually react ("blow-up") if they pull the wrong wire or push the wrong button or something... baking soda and vinegar was kinda messy and not a big enuf explosion, and mentos and coke would be too hard to set up to look like a bomb... i'm lost, PLEASE HELP!

I don't want it to be super BORING either. It's not going ot be anywhere that anyone other than the campers could find it (no bomb scares).

Well... I think you kindof had something with the mentos and coke thing... What if you put the coke bottles into large paper tubes like the kind strech rap for wrapping pallets comes on and then punch a bunch of small holes in the paper tubes and cap the ends securely then if the rope the mentos was suspended from was brought through a small hole in the frount of the tube and maybe you have 3 of these tubes taped together at the top and bottom with duct tape, anyhow the rope suspending the mentos comes through little holes in the front of the tubes then if you had a plastic box attached to the frount of the tubes and ran the ropes inside of it and connected them to random points inside the box then added aditional colored ropes then the ropes could be like wires and to defuse it they would have to not cut the ones supporting the mentos. Of course you would want the multiple ropes supporting the mentos to be cut all at once if they were cut so you would probibly want to run all the ropes in slightly twisted groups of 3 so they all get cut in threes. That way the whole thing sprayes the soda all at once. The tubes could be painted red and decorated to look however you want... I have never tried this but maybe the idea helps spark other idea's that could help you with a solution. I think it would work but there would be some trial and error with some of the variables. The paper tubes should be only as large as they need to be to house the coke bottles. I hope you can envision what I am describing since I can't draw you a sketch.

I'll second the suggestion of using a buzzer or other electrical noisemaker. Much neater, re-usable, and you can tell them it's some kind of sprig-ray bomb and if they hear it go off they've fatally irradiated the entire camp.

You could just wire up two batteries with opposing polarities, so if they disconnect one of them, the "bomb" goes off. The rest of it is just dressing it up to look like something evil from SPECTRE.

If you charge an electrolytic capacitor with the wrong polarity to a sufficiently high voltage, you can get a pretty loud bang.

I have only blown them by accident not by intent. So you will probably have to experiment with it a little to assess the level of safety. And yes, it will come with smell as well.

how fast would you like the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms to show up at your door? You realize that the FBI will be there too, right?

may i suggest that you go to a hardware store and buy an electric buzzer instead. this will be a lot safer and easier to setup.
