Because they don't understand the essence of our [fleeting] free state - a constitutional republic. They think it amounts to casting a vote for one dunce over another (see the Simpson's episode with 2 aliens, which nicely sums it up) I do think we're getting a heavy dose of reality: witness HAMAS' victory; witness Hezbollah's membership in Lebanon's Parliament; witness the pile of junk Iraqi constitution. These are democracy in action.

In the US we live in a representative democracy. A Republic is controlled by a governing body which controls all the power, much like ours, the difference is our government is separated into different branches some elected by the people others selected by the government, also we have states which are also empowered at the same level of the government, where as in a republic the main government controls all powers local and national.

It is a Republic..just not so you'd notice;
I pledge allegiance to the flag , and to the REPUBLIC, for which it stands............................
Funny how it seems more important to stick God in the pledge and yet not even remember the rest of it..just saying IT by rote, meaning the God part, that I will never say.
I guess the disaster in the Middle East must have somethhing to do with Bush parroting over and over we're bringing them democracy!

Yes, technically, according to the constitution, we have "a republican form of government." But that republic has incorporated democratic elements deep within its structure. So it is not wrong to say that the USA is a "democracy."

I suspect a more sinister reason. The best way to eliminate the rule of law is to replace it with the rule of the mob, or democracy. Socialist and their lapdog media have been praising democracy since WWI and see it as a way to push their leftist agenda.
Without the protection of individual rights provided by the rule of law, what you see with the new democracies of the middle east is what you get. Your rights are protected by the whim of the mob.

Democratic republicanism is the system of government since the federal states have laws of their own but under the control of the central government in Washington.

If we all knew the sky was blue, and someone of high office kept calling it red, pretty soon we would all start seeing the sky as red.
