Amino is for high risk pregnancy's and doctors don't like to give them unless the mom is over 30 or there are other risk factors. Amino's are risky for the baby my friend had one because she was over 30 and she miscarried 3 days later. I think she said the doctor told her 1 in 100 will miscarry when a amino is preformed but don't quote me. But I do remember it was not a risk worth taking if you did not need it.

Most physicians do an ultra sound between 17-20 weeks gestation to check for normal fetal development as well as correct placement of the placenta. If the placenta is too low this can be life threatening to both the mother and the baby. As far as an amniocentesis is concerned , it is rarely performed. If the doctor is suggesting an amnio it is b/c there is already a reason to suspect a problem with the pregnancy , it is a high risk pregnancy or sometimes if there is a question about delivering early they do one to determine if the babies lungs are ready and therefor it is safe to deliver. It is an invasive procedure and there are risks of infection or other complications. However , if you are seeing a doctor that you trust and they are use to doing the procedure then you should be comfortable with their decision to and ability to perform the procedure. Dr's dont rush into amnios and only do them when they have to. I had one with my 3rd b/c my 2nd was a preemie and in the NICU for 28 days. My condition was worsening but I did not want to deliver her b4 she could breath on her own so we did an amnio and found she was not ready so we put off the delivery 2 more weeks to give her lungs time to mature. The amnio wasn't painful , only took a few minutes and there were no complications.

I chose not to have the amnio after the blood test and the ultrasound both did not show any concerns. You are not obligated to have it. We read th benefits and the risks and I said no way after realizing that the risk of miscarriage caused by the amnio was higher than the risk of what they were testing for. Besides, the results would only have prepared me for the worst - there was no way I would have terminated.
Also, my sister-in-law had a baby diagnosed with Down's Syndrom via amnio and they kept her - good thing they did because she was perfectly healthy. The doctor even told them to abort her.Don't have the amnio unless you really need it.

I have had an amnio~ twice and it hurts really bad. Yes it is risky for the baby because it is a long needle going into your womb. There are risks with everything. The question you need to ask your self is, is the reason for doing the amnio worth more than the risk. Like i said i had 2 and my baby was just fine.

Ultrasound is safe to get anytime. It is just sound waves going through your belly, letting you see a 3 dimensional view of your baby. Ultrasound techs and doctors will be able to detect certain abnormalities and also the sex around 3 months of pregnancy.

In order to determine whether to do an amniocentesis, you should speak to the doctor and geneticist. The result of the amnio is extremely accurate and will let you know the sex and any chromosomal abnormalities, like retardation.

During the process, it is not painful at all. It has been described to me like a prick of a finger. It is a bit uncomfortable as your stomach muscles will constrict while the needle is in there. Takes about 2 minutes to complete.

Amniotic fluid is replaced within 24 hours and you will definitely need to take it easy for the next 2-3 days. No heavy lifting and avoid walking around for too long.

You should definitely speak to the doctor about the odds of any complications. But with the latest technology and how often doctors perform this procedure…personally, I feel it is worth doing for peace of mind. But you need to carefully weigh the odds versus the benefit.

Amnio is not suggested unless it is a high risk pregnancy. I am not sure of the risks to the baby. Ultrasounds are normally done at least once during the pregnancy, but it causes no harm for the baby or mother.

Ultrasound is nothing to refuse. I let them look every time they suggested it because the results are so immediate and I got to look, too. Plus, it helped me plan, and it reassured my doctor and I that my babies were safe. (I developed pre-eclampsia in both pregnancies.)

Amnio...I was never even offered it. Like a previous poster said, I don't think they bring it up unless they see a risk. Me, I was under 35 with no family history of genetic disease, etc, so they didn't bother.

I was offered the AFP triple-screen, but I declined after talking with my OB/GYN about what risk category I was in for the diseases the test looks for and what the false positive/false negative rates are. The AFP test is pretty non-invasive, though. I think it's just a blood test?

Anyway, you should discuss all of these things with your doctor. If you trust him or her, you should feel comfortable asking questions, soliciting his or her advice, and then making your own decision.

I don't think that a good doctor will try to push you toward amnio unless they really feel it would be a good thing for you in your particular situation.

they will only ever recommend things if they feel you are at risk
amnios are only done if necessary... it is not a would or wouldnt you like to question... they will usually present you with very good reasons why they think it is best
i had an amnio with my second... he was sick and they didnt know what was wrong... they believed it could help them determine the problem so i did it
yes it does hurt and feel uncomfortable but technology is so good now that the risks are mimimal
trust the doctors and relax when you are doing it and DONT watch the monitor as it is pretty disgusting seeing it on the screen

I've never had an amnio, and I had 3 babies. They reserve those for people they feel might have a high risk pregnancy, though anyone can get one.

I refused the amnio. It's a genetic test, so if it doesn't matter to you if there are any abnormalities, then don't get it. There is a risk for miscarriage, but I think it's pretty low. Talk to your doctor and share your concerns. I actually refused all genetic testing. I said I didn't care either way so why waste our time?
