If 2+2 = 1, then

4+4 = 2*2 + 2*2
= 2*(2+2)
=2*1
=2.

Further, if 2+2 =1, then for any x, x+x+x = 0. I.e., 3*x = 0. Here's why:

x+x+x = x+x+x+x-x
= 2x + 2x - x
= (2+2)x - x
= 1x - x
=x-x = 0

A mathematical system (in particular, a field) having the property that x+x+x = 0 for all x is said to have characteristic 3. Such fields are sometimes used for mathematical games and for cryptography.
