UPS systems act as surge protectors, power regulators, and batteries.

They charge using the current from an outlet, then pass that regulated protected power on to whatever device or appiance you plug into it.

I have a APC 500 and it has the same thing. Plug your computer, monitor and if able, Router and cable/dsl modem on the Battery plugs, plug your printer and anything else that doesn't fit into the Surge plugs (Router, cable/dsl modem, Printers, especially laser printers will suck your battery dry and make it worthless as a UPS, so make sure the printer is on the Surge side!)

Also it should have come with a USB cable and software, hook that up according to the instructions and install the software. this way if you are not there when the power goes off it will shut your computer down safely before losing power.

This thing replaces your surge protector. A normal Surge Protector just protects again powers surges and such. A UPS does everything that a surge protector does and it will be able to power everything plugged in for a few minutes until the power comes back on.
