That's my favorite, as well! The first two books in the series were very obviously children's books and not very well-written. Plus, their plots were so similiar, they were almost interchangable.
The Prisoner of Azkaban was the book where not only the children grew up, but the author did as well. Plus it revealed that the books were, in fact, not only for children. It also has a great story - like you said, the ending is so great! So unexpected, but plausible! I love it.
It also helped that it introduced two of my favorite characters - Sirius Black and Remus Lupin.

hmm . . . favorite is a tie between the 2nd book and the 6th. Chamber of Secrets is really interesting and I love books that have a little mystery! It's perfect because of the whole basilisk thing, and Hermione being petrified so that Ron and Harry have to figure it all out by themselves (although she does help . . . pipes). Then the 6th one is good because you get lots of answers and the characters are so grown up and more interesting than before. I definitely think that the 7th will be my favorite later on because it'll tie up all the loose ends and it will just be really interesting (but sad too because we will have no hope for more Harry Potter books . . .). Oh, by the way, Order of the Phoenix was by far my least favorite one, the only part I liked in the 5th book were the DA meetings, but that's about it.
P.S. Sorry about the long answer . . .

My favorite Harry Potter book is Goblet of Fire. It sets the stage for the rest of the series, and not just because Voldemort is given a new body. I believe that Harry to rising to the challenges of the Triwizard tournment are, with the help of his friend, the preamble to the final book and the challenges that are sure to come up when he looks for and destroys the remaining Horcruxes.

Mine's Prisoner of Azkaban too. I liked it because (this will sound stupid) Voldemort didn't bother anyone in this book. No deaths, no evil, etc. Plus Harry got a godfather out of the deal, which is always a bonus.

a million. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:: the tip each little thing wraps up and is wise, to no longer point out non end action 2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of hearth:: this style of clean examine, takes away each and all of the college drama and is remarkable and spell binding 3. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban:: new characters and Harry gets kin!!! 4. Harry Potter and the 0.5-Blood Prince:: style of puzzling with snape yet enjoyed the epic conflict scene 5. Harry Potter and the Chamber of secrets and strategies:: no longer as lots action because of fact the rest yet nevertheless exciting to work out the growth of a 300 and sixty 5 days 6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix:: too lots drama from Harry-- continuously shouting and moody, no longer partial to that fringe of him 7. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone:: too sluggish interior the initiating although thats comprehensible because of fact which you will desire to introduce the characters

My favorite is the fourth book because I really was able to feel the emotions that were going on in the book and was able to truly experience the tides turning from being a book about adventures to a book being about the challenges of good VS evil.

man i gotta say the first one cuz its just real nice that its simple and straightforward. plus its the book Jk Rowl. wrote completely out of her thoughts, like these days she has like a team to continue the series all she did for the 3rd book on to the current one is give them a draft and the team does most of it. PLus the first one i think has the best plot.

I read the third in about an hour I loved it soooo much. Lots of twists and turns.
The fourth was beautiful with its imagery but many people feel it got bogged down.
The fifth was my least favorite.
Maybe the sixth is my least favorite.
I want to read the third again.

Yes I agree Prisoner of Azkaban is my favourite too. Probably because Lupin is in it so much and because there is so much action in it.
