He didn't mention EGR? Take it to a dealership, and tell them the problem, and possibly show them paperwork on what the car is failing on. I highly doubt it can be a radio causing that. Like fish talking to us, and telling us to finger them...Stupid ain't it?

These people commenting are wrong. I bought my 2001 Volkswagen Golf from a Charity auction, because they lost the face to the radio, I immediately bought and replaced the radio with a Kenwood. I just took my first smog test after two years and it Failed because the OBD System was not communicating with the car.
I was told that this is because the Factory VW radio is not present. Like me, you may have to find a car stereo place that will allow you to buy or use an old VW radio for your smog, OR (better option) go to a VW dealership and tell them the problem and hopefully buy or use a Factory radio from them; it will still need VW installation to communicate with the car, which I hear is $45. Cost of VW Factory Radio, and wiring charges of $45, plus retaking the smog is what you will probably be out, like me.
I'm waiting until I have more money to do this even though I've already paid for my tags. Be careful with purchasing VW radios Online for your car though. Each VW has a specific model they use, like a fingerprint, and most places will not give you a refund if your purchase the wrong one. Good Luck, hun.

Haha, a factory stereo won't affect smog tests.
Well the 1996 passat has coolant leaks and usually has problems with it's #3 relay, I'm not sure if those would cause problems, but get them checked.

those are 2 distinctive issues. you may no longer bypass emissions with seen smog kit lacking in case you prefer to defeat the carry out of the EGR valve merely plug the line with a bb. Dont eliminate it! I are actually not waiting to evaluate you ought to efficiently forged off one besides cuz it ought to go away a noisy hollow. The hi NOX examining shows another subject because of the reality that maximum automobiles run cleanser/larger devoid of an exhaust gasoline recirculation valve. base line is, which you will circulate any emission test with sufficient air pumps. See in case you will locate the air pump and run as we communicate vacuum (unswitched) to it so it pumps air down the tailpipe continually. Ta-da! soft exhaust! provide me the kind and engine length and in unfavourable wellness look it up for you

i highly doubt that the stereo would create poor emissions. you should take a look at your local auto parts store for a fuel additive that guarantees you to pass emissions. you just pout it in a half tank of gas and run it down a little and go get your car inspected. its around $10 a bottle.

that sounds stupid and i doubt its true since your cars a 96. That might sound better if you had a 2000 something year car but on a 96 i highly doubt it. try getting your exaust changed(not to sure),um spark plugs, wires and distributor cap, basically get a tune up and replace the plugs, wires, and dist. cap even if this dosnt solve the problem your car will run better and get better gas mileage

the stereo has nothing to do with passing emmisions. it's a low wattage draw device and has minimal draw on your charging system and should have no effect on your emmisions control. you were fed a line of crap. if in doubt, shut off all unnecessary electric devices during a test so the alternator has less load on it.
