I am into the first month of my new DSL circuit. I had DSL a couple of years ago, but I changed phone companies and my service could be routed to the new system. Now I an on a standalone DSL and it is three times faster than the old one. Now I can stream vids at 300K with no stutter or drop outs.

by the sounds of it your're lacking a DSL clear out. with a view to apply a 'regularly occurring' telephone line (for calls/fax) you want to plug the cord right into a clear out and then into the DSL line. in the different case the alerts get blended up. verify the cord that comes out of your fax and into the phone line. If it is not any longer already, attempt plugging it right into a DSL clear out and then the clear out into the phone line.
