There are tons of great ones, some of my favorites are Jaco Pastorius, Flea, Stefan Lessard, Victor Wooten, and John Entwistle, and there's still all the other greats like Phil Lesh, Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Jack Bruce, Les Claypool, Allen Woody, Bootsy Collins, Alphonso Johnson, Rocco Prestia, Larry Graham, Billy Cox, Tony Levin, Meshell N'degeocello, there are way too many to list, so I'm stopping here. Who do you think is the best and why?

Wow.....you listed most of the great ones but I (being a bassist also) really like Will Lee of David Letterman fame. He can play almost any style and play it well.

Robert Sledge of Ben Folds Five fame!!! (yeah yeah yeah he's not a super bass idol, but I still love him to death)

And Ben Folds himself isn't half bad either.
