B/f John is networking his father's friends for a job but he will insist on wearing his old school tie. He admits none of them wear one but thinks it still sends the right signals. What are the modern nods and winks?

Yes, lots of useless people get good jobs because they know someone, not because they are best qualified

People should get the job because they deserve it... Not because of a friend or family etc.. But a coomon sign u have the job is a wink and nod... But be careful cos this could constitute a gay pass... Another is a firm handshake.. But be careful again cos the other guy may have u down as a crack dealer and if ya dont pass him something he may get angry...

Yes, it is still who you know; though I think he may be going a bit too overboard by wearing his old school tie. He could simply mention to people where he went to school. Wearing the old school tie, if he is doing this for real, is far too obvious. People may practice nepotism, but they don't want it advertised that they do.

Most modern winks happen in toilets.
School ties, masonic rings are so blase' everyones got one, from a shop.
Its only relevant, if youve actually been there.
He'll look like a "yes" man.
It gives all the wrong signals.
It says i suck up.
yes, network, but do it from the point of advice, what should i do to progress? openly to dads chums, drop his cv/ talents in conversation. My guess is he'll look desparate, otherwise. Join what they do, golf etc, at their own level, make FRIENDS prove himself in his field, to people in his field, so word gets around, THEN these friends, may be helpful. they wont employ him as a sap, as dads son, but as a guy they should have on their team, luckily, THEY happen to know him. be patient, sucking up is subltle!

Sometimes it is who you know. But if you're doing an outstanding job where people recognize you, then more people will get to know you.
