Why don't you go to England?
Its a bit expensive there these days, but:
1) They speak the same language!
2) Its about a 6 hour flight from NY
3) Tons of history
4) Tons of bars, pubs, clubs
5) Museums
6) Shopping
7) Easy to get around in (walking, taxis, the Tube)

I would go to Brazil.
Stay away from the monster cities like San Paulo and Rio, they have lots of pluses but the levels of crime and violence are way to high. You could have a great time in a smaller city like Vittoria, Fortaleza or Recife and the beaches their are even more beautiful than the ones in Rio (especially Recife).

go to India southern side it is cheaper, friendly people, it will be a cultural shock if you have never been to other poor countries, if you get a lonely planet book you can find lot of info, it is tropical, traveling could be frustating if you don't take things easy, people will try to make more money of you because you are foreigner, but bargaining always helps.
