That sound that you hear when no sound is present is called TINNITUS.

Approximately 17-20% of the population has experienced tinnitus that has lasted for more than 48 hours. For about 2% of the population tinnitus is severe and it severely disturbs the way of life of between 0.5% and 1.0% of the population.

There are many possible causes of tinnitus. Among the most common are:
Exposure to loud noise
Degeneration of the bones in the middle ear
Many prescription and non-prescription drugs
Extreme stress or trauma

It is NOT someone taking about you. It is either a continued stimulus to the fine hairs in the cochlea of your inner ear or damage, either temporary or permanentt to the auditory nerve or the auditory centre in the brain.

Often you can experience this after a loud gig. Your hearing system adapts to the loud noises and enables you to be able to pick out other sounds that would be submerged by the high level of background noise. You can here a friend talking, maybe with difficulty, although they should be drowned by the background music. Once the music stops, your hearing continues to make the adaptation so you "hear" sounds that are not there. This rarely lasts more than an hour or so and is quite normal.

If you are experiencing what you believe is tinnitus, and it continues for hours or interferes with your ability to hear or sleep, it is important for you to consult your doctor and then perhaps an ENT specialist to establish whether there is any underlying treatable cause of your tinnitus.

tinitus, apprently, or allegedly 'white noise' can help block it. I had it for about 2 years and just realised when I read your question that it was gone, dont know when or why, I had got used to it!
